The Canary Islands continually inspire creation. Its interesting natural contrasts, the talent present on the islands and the support of institutions have led to the formation of
Canarian fashion as an entity with its own personality.
Freshness, colour, sustainability and a clear inspiration from the characteristic elements of the Islands are the hallmarks of this growing industry, which currently employs professionals from different fields.
Designers, stylists, fashion editors, photographers, pattern makers, bloggers and modelling agencies are the protagonists of a whole compendium that is increasingly receiving more support inside and outside the Archipelago.
Both the Tenerife Council, with the creation of the Tenerife Moda organisation, and the Gran Canaria Council, responsible for
Gran Canaria Moda Cálida , have been supporting workers in the sector for years, with a clear commitment to specialised training in these areas, as well as through programmes to promote designers and other emerging professionals.
Canarian designers you should know
Although there are many players in this industry, we wanted to make a selection of
Canarian designers and brands that are worth keeping in mind. Now that summer is in full swing, we would like to mention authentic references in
swimwear , such as Aurelia Gil, Alida Domínguez or the Tenerife brand Oh! Soleil, which in its latest collection combined the most bohemian and elegant fabrics with a vintage feel.
Party dresses for events and celebrations are also one of the great specialties of our favorite designers. Juan Carlos Armas has been well established for many years on and off the islands, but it is also worth keeping an eye on other exquisite firms such as María Mía, Roselinde or Josep Mestres.
Of course, we didn't want to forget about
brides , who are currently one of the fastest growing markets in the Canary Islands. Marco&María are currently the main global reference, although you're sure to have heard of other brands such as Amarca, Sedomir Rodríguez de la Sierra or By Loleiro.
Finally, although we are referring to the
film industry , it is necessary to mention some of the main architects of
costume design in Spanish productions. All of them winners of
Goya awards , including the award-winning Paco Delgado from Conejero (Blancanieves, Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi), as well as Paola Torres (1898. Los último de Filipinas) and Tatiana Hernández (Lope).
Upcoming events in Canarian fashion
Since its recent creation,
Hotel GF Victoria***** GL has always wanted to show its support for the Canary Islands fashion sector. It demonstrated this at the last edition of the Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje event, participating as a sponsor and promoter of the combination of climate and fashion that characterises it. This year the great event will take place between 14 and 20 October.
On the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria, we also have one of the most internationally renowned fashion weeks.
Gran Canaria Swimwear Fashion Week is the main showcase for swimwear fashion on the island, with contributions from Canarian and Spanish brands, as well as from others present in the rest of Europe. If you are a design lover, you cannot miss this event between 3 and 5 October.
On the other hand, this autumn we are also expecting
Feboda , which specialises not only in bridal fashion, but also in all the latest developments and advances in the wedding sector. From 25 to 27 October, at the Tenerife Fairgrounds, you will have the opportunity to discover the most trendy designs by Canarian designers and, of course, to visit the
GF Hoteles stand , which will help you to finalise all the details for your long-awaited wedding. Make a note of the dates in your diary because we are looking forward to meeting you.
