The Canary Islands offer a
perfect balance between development and sustainability , making it an ideal option for the new type of tourist, especially concerned about the environment. In a clear attempt to reduce the impact on the environment as much as possible, our island offers more and more alternative plans with which to enjoy the incredible natural wonders in a much more responsible way.
This is probably not the first time you have heard about Tenerife as an ideal destination for
whale watching . Indeed, the islands are located at a strategic point between three continents (Europe, Africa and America), and are a frequent transit point for this type of species.
Up to 21 different varieties of cetaceans have been recorded in recent years on the island of Tenerife, especially in the
Teno-Masca marine strip . This area, where the famous Los Gigantes Cliffs are located, has been declared a Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) and is a hub for whale watching excursions in Tenerife.
Whale watching in Tenerife: nature in its purest form
The first thing you should know before booking your excursion to discover the
cetaceans of Tenerife is that there are only a few boats authorised for this type of expedition. Companies that comply with the regulations and ensure a safe and sustainable experience fly
a yellow flag with the distinctive 'Blue Boat' .
Please note that the islands' dolphins and pilot whales are protected by national and international conservation laws, so it is everyone's responsibility not to contribute to bad practices and to be very respectful of the natural conditions of the cetaceans.
Boats must avoid approaching more than 60 metres from the species, sailing at high speed and disturbing the animals. Anyone who opts for this type of excursion is prohibited from throwing waste into the water, feeding the animals, bathing with them or touching them.
This is a
unique experience - precisely because of the unpredictable behaviour of cetaceans - and a great opportunity to practice ecotourism with some of the most fascinating animals in the oceans.
Cetaceans to discover
There is an 80% chance of seeing one of Tenerife's many species of cetaceans during one of these excursions. The Los Gigantes area, just a few kilometres from the
Hotel GF Victoria***** GL , is often home to the so-called resident species, such as the Bottlenose Dolphin or the Tropical Pilot Whale.
With a bit of luck, you can also see other species that are seen sporadically, such as the well-known sperm whales, as well as those that are in the process of migration, such as the Rocual or the Common Dolphin.
This is an ideal activity to enjoy with the family.
Children have a great time learning about the different types of species and discovering the true value of the sea and the biodiversity found there. If you are looking for memorable moments during your holidays in Tenerife, rest assured that the Atlantic Ocean will become a source of surprises.
